Palomar Knot

The palomar knot is used widely among fishermen for attaching a terminal to the line, it is very popular with fishermen using braid. It is especially popular among carp fishermen, who commonly use braid line, this is because the knot has only minimum strangulation, thus not causing too much stress to the line, which would come apart if too much friction is applied to it.

How to tie the palomar knot

These are the steps to tying it

Start by doubling the line back about 150mm (6 inches)and passing it through the eye of the hook.

Next tie an overhand knot in the doubled line, do not tighten the knot. Have the hook hanging loose at the bottom.

With overhand knot still loose and holding it between the forefinger and thumb. Slip the loop at the end of the line over the hook. Move the loop towards the eye of the hook.

Finally, pull on the main line and the tag line together until the knot is almost. Before you tighten the knot, moisten it and then tighten fully. Cut off the surplus on the tag.
Note that the the loop which is passed over the hook also passes over the eye and not pulled tight against the eye, this may cause the knot to fail.

This knot when tied correctly is a very strong knot, some say it is almost 100% perfect.
